Peterson PipesBriar Pipe Brands
Peterson's Patent SystemPeterson of Dublin have been a leading pipe manufacturer for over a century. Charles Peterson developed the Peterson Patent System in 1890. The system consists of a graduated bore in the mouthpiece which helps to collect tar and moisture into a reservoir and away from the bowl of the pipe resulting in a drier smoke. The "P-lip" vulcanite mouthpiece, invented a few years later in 1898, is designed so that the smoke is directed up and away from the tongue, resulting in less "tongue bite". The "P" Lip mouthpiece is what has made this brand famous worldwide for it's extremely smooth smoke. Standard mouthpieces are also available. Today, Peterson pipes are still some of the finest crafted pipes in the industry. The briar bowls are sorted into ten grades ranging from lower qualities to straight grains and Supremes. One of the most distinguishing characteristics of this brand is the use of silver and gold bands and stem mountings that adorn many of the pipes. The 'Spigot' has a sterling silver covering on the tapered end of the mouthpiece which compliments the sterling silver band. The Spigot style evolved from the practice of soldiers in earlier centuries who repaired broken pipes by sliding a used cartridge case over the shank and reinserting the mouthpiece. "The importance of producing as perfect a pipe as possible is evident, when we realize how universally smoking has affected modern thought in Art, Science, Literature, Politics, and even the Pulpit; how it has influenced the best wit of our time, and brought relief and solace to over-taxed energies" - Charles Peterson, 1890 |
